Spider veins

In my practice, I treat spider veins—fine, reddish-blue veins that many perceive as unsightly “mini varicose veins”—with modern laser therapy. This gentle, precise method allows me to selectively obliterate dilated superficial vessels without damaging surrounding tissue. The treatment is generally well tolerated and requires little downtime. My approach combines dermatological expertise with aesthetic sensitivity to restore your skin's evenness and clarity. I offer individualized and transparent advice for visibly smoother legs and improved skin appearance.

Laser therapy for spider veins – Effective treatment for fine veins

Spider veins are fine, reddish-bluish dilated blood vessels (telangiectasias) that commonly appear on the legs. Many individuals perceive these superficial veins—often referred to colloquially as “mini varicose veins”—as a cosmetic concern. Modern laser therapy offers a targeted, gentle, and effective method to precisely remove spider veins and visibly improve the skin’s appearance.

Spider veins develop due to dilation of the smallest veins in the upper layer of the skin (dermis). Possible causes include genetic predisposition, hormonal influences, prolonged standing, or connective tissue weakness. Medically, they are usually an aesthetic issue; however, a specialist examination should always be performed prior to treatment to rule out underlying venous disorders requiring medical care.

How does laser therapy for spider veins work?

During spider vein treatment with a vascular laser, focused light energy is directed into the dilated blood vessels. The hemoglobin in the blood absorbs this energy, causing the vessel to heat up in a controlled manner and close (coagulation). The surrounding tissue is largely spared. Over the following weeks, the body gradually breaks down the treated vessel.

Laser therapy is considered precise, low-risk, and well tolerated. In most cases, several treatment sessions are required, depending on the severity and individual skin type.

Most patients tolerate the procedure well. During treatment, a brief warming or pinprick sensation may occur as the laser energy is delivered to the vessel. Modern vascular laser systems include cooling mechanisms to protect the skin and enhance comfort. Anesthesia is usually not required.

The number of sessions depends on the extent, depth, and location of the spider veins, as well as individual skin type. In many cases, two to four treatments are necessary to achieve optimal results. Smaller, superficial vessels often respond more quickly than larger or deeper ones.

Temporary redness, mild swelling, or slight darkening of the treated vessels may occur and typically resolves within a few days. Sun exposure, tanning beds, and intense heat (e.g., sauna) should be avoided for a limited period. Compression therapy may be recommended in certain cases to support the healing process.
